Frank Gore Breaks Hand

Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore broke his hand yesterday in a non contact ball handling drill.

According to the team Gore should be back towards the end of pre-season so we'll have him back for the start of our season.

Now I don't know about you but this makes me pretty damn nervous. Gore, if you remember, had some pretty major fumbles last year that cost us a few games. For all the amazing things he does on the field beating NFL defenses into submission he still needs to get a better handle on the ball to become a truly elite running back. Hopefully this injury doesn't set him even further back in his development. Check out the video, it'll make ya feel better . . . . .

RIP Bill Walsh

Today the Niners Faithful lost what may have been the best coach in NFL history. Bill Walsh died at the age of 75 after his long fight with leukemia. Everyone please pour out a little liquor . . .

R.I.P. Coach

Bill Walsh passed away this morning. Words can't capture what this man accomplished and the legacy he leaves. To get a sense of this impact check out Michael Lewis' The Blind Side or this Michael Silver piece from March. On Opening Day this year, 18 of the NFL's 32 head coaches are part of Walsh's coaching tree. That is an unreal number but hardly surprising.

Rest in peace, Coach Walsh. You will be missed but never forgotten.

CAMP OPENS TODAY

Players have arrived for the beginning of training camp. Follow training camp at the official site.

Day 1 marks the beginning of the season, especially for a young team that is all potential. The number of new faces means this team has to use the next 6 weeks effectively if it wants to live up to the hype. This is also the first time in several years where there will be hard-fought battles for depth chart position and/or roster spots - a welcome change from when the coaching staff was determining which stiff was least likely to embarrass them on a weekly basis. I'm looking at you Kwame.

News Roundup - Day 1:
*Larry Allen isn't in yet, but he's probably going to be sitting out most of it anyway to preserve himself for the season.
*DJ82's toe is still bothering him. This is going to be something to keep an eye on all season since that is an injury that tends to nag and flare up randomly.
*49ers Webzone has a decent liveblog of the first open session. Sounds like the team is loose and having a good time with the fans that made it out there.

All Picks Signed

Willis is in. $16.7 million over 5 years. It'll get torn up and re-done in 3 years if he is as good as advertised. Here's some footage of Willis wreaking havoc in the SEC. Especially note (at 0:26) him running down Arkansas RB Darren McFadden, this year's early favorite to win the Heisman. That's freakish game speed and it belongs to the Niners' defensive anchor for the next decade. PREDICTION: Willis replaces Derek Smith in the starting lineup by week 5.

Filthy. Just filthy.

The next line of the song goes "Believed by very few, just keep it very cool, or we will bury you." Sounds like the 2007 Niners to me. The team had a phenomenal offseason. Now it's time to make it happen on the field.

Plenty more to come throughout training camp, including breakdowns of each position, the team's prospects and an NFL preview.

Seven Down. Two to Go.

The team announced it had signed Jason Hill to a four-year contract on Thursday evening. Talks are ongoing with Patrick Willis and Ray McDonald. All sides are hopeful the two defensive players will sign and report to camp when it opens Sunday.

Personally, I liked the Hill pick a lot. He was clocked as one of the fastest players at the combine (4.32) and should push Ashley Lelie hard for playing time. Speed at wideout is something we had with Antonio "Orange Lambo" Bryant for a few games last year, but that quickly faded with his attitude. The rest of the corps is made up of possession-type guys (DJ82, Battle, Gilmore, etc.) and Lelie is supposed to be our field-stretcher. But his historical lack of production (*cough* BUST *cough*) makes me wonder if he catches more than 20-30 balls this year. Preditction: Hill replaces Lelie in the lineup by week 8.

FLASHBACK: The last time the Niners brought in a 3rd-round WR with a chip on his shoulder, it turned out ok......well, until the end.

The Dawn of a New Era

Welcome to the beginning of a New Niner Era.

To the fans who stuck out the dark years under Terry Donahue (aka He Who Shall Not Be Named), God bless you.

To those who abandoned the team and return now, welcome back.

To the haters all across the world, we pity you.

This blog is for all the Niners Faithful who can remember Y.A. Tittle, Hacskaw Reynolds, John Taylor, Dexter Carter, and Terrell Owens.

It has been at least half a decade since the Faithful have been able to see hope.

Hope is here and it wears #21.

16-to-87 and 8-to-80 and 5-to-81 will be joined by 11-to-85.

The Mach2 linebacking corps looks to wreak havoc from sideline to sideline.

Nate "Playmaker" Clements leads the new-look secondary that institutes a no-fly zone.

Training camp opens in 3 days. The season starts in 6 weeks. The rest of the league has no clue what it's in for. Join us for the ride.
